Jamie Carragher bluntly rules out Christian Pulisic reaching Eden Hazard’s level

Much of the build-up ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League trip to Real Madrid was focused on the Blues facing up against their former star Eden Hazard.

However, the Belgian failed to make an impact after coming on as a substitute and it was Christian Pulisic – who replaced Hazard in the Blues squad in 2019 – who made the headlines as he opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw.

There has been a great deal of excitement around the potential of the American – aged just 22 despite amassing almost 200 senior appearances across spells with Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea – but pundit Jamie Carragher is doubtful he can hit the heights that Hazard once did.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher credited Hazard as being the best player in the Premier League for four years during his tenure at Stamford Bridge and also as being the best player at the most recent World Cup.

Whist Carragher believes Pulisic looks set to have a great future at the Blues, he is sceptical that he can replicate what Hazard achieved.

Carragher told CBS Sports on Tuesday: “I’m a big fan but I don’t think he’ll get to the level of Eden Hazard…apologies, he won’t.

“Eden Hazard was the best player in the Premier League for four years and Belgian finished third in the World Cup (in 2018), he was the best player in the tournament – that is the level we are talking about with Hazard.

“This is not me knocking Pulisic – it might look that on social media after the show from certain people! – but I think we forget how good Hazard was.

“He was my favourite player in the Premier League and for Pulisic to get there and to light up a major tournament for the US will be difficult.

“Yes, I think he can have a brilliant career and he has a lot of potential but I don’t see him getting to that level.”
