Klopp confirms Alisson and Fabinho will not feature at Watford

Former Liverpool defender and club icon Jamie Carragher has claimed his old team need to strengthen their options at right-back and in attack next summer.

Despite the overwhelming majority of the Anfield faithful calling for further additions to be made to the playing squad, boss Jurgen Klopp signed just one player last summer in central defender Ibrahima Konate.

Dutchman Gini Wijnaldum called time on his Liverpool career after five years at the club – opting against extending his contract in favour of upping sticks to Paris Saint-Germain, yet the Reds did not replace his presence in central midfield.

Klopp’s side have not been made to pay for their transfer inactivity as of yet, as they sit second in the Premier League table after seven games played while topping their particularly difficult Champions League group – made up of Porto, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have made a bright start to the season

Even as they breathe down the necks of league leaders Chelsea who are one point in front, Carragher feels Liverpool’s lack of squad depth could come back to haunt them.

The former Reds centre-back explained where Liverpool need to strengthen if they are to win a second Premier League title in three seasons.

“There’s no doubt that Liverpool don’t have the strength of Manchester United, City or Chelsea. They just don’t, their squads are unbelievable,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Overlap forum.

“But in terms of the 11, if you saw Liverpool’s 11, if they were playing Man City’s best team in a Champions League final or an FA Cup final – I’d still fancy Liverpool.

“Over the season, you won’t be getting that first 11, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] missed out against City and you saw the problems James Milner had.

“It’s not so much that Liverpool don’t have a great squad, they do, they’re just really short in probably two areas.”

Carragher went on to pinpoint exactly where Klopp must look to bolster his options, revealing: “Right back is a massive one as we saw against City, they’ve probably got the best set of centre-backs in the Premier League.

“The front players you’ve got Jota to add to Firmino, although that looks like a fight for a position.

“But I do think they’re an attacker short to go and win the league.

“With Salah and maybe Mane missing in January for the Africa Cup of Nations, someone better than Origi or Minamino on the bench, that these other teams have got.”

Klopp’s side take on Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon knowing they could end the match-week top of the pile.

Title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United face daunting away trips to Brentford and Leicester City respectively, while Man City welcome Burnley to the Etihad.
