Joe Willock: Arsenal loanee scores on his Newcastle debut

Willock, 21, left Arsenal for Newcastle on loan on deadline day of the January transfer window in order to get first-team football in the Premier League.

While Arsenal fell to their second straight League defeat at Aston Villa in Saturday’s early kick-off, Willock started for Steve Bruce’s Magpies against Southampton at St James’ Park.

Willock had an instant impact for Newcastle, starting brightly before clinically finishing to put his new club a goal up after 16 minutes.

Allan Saint-Maximin, not for the first time, got the better of Jan Bednarek; the Frenchman controlled Fabian Schar’s long ball superbly past the defender before surging into the penalty area to serve it up for fast-arriving Willock to side-foot home.
