Jorge Masvidal has blamed Leon Edwards for the altercation which led to their years-long feud and eventual fight booking.

The pair were involved in a physical spat after a show at The O2 arena in London in March 2019, when Masvidal hit Edwards during a post-fight interview session.

Since that day, both the American and his Brit rival have been calling for the fight, although their careers took separate paths that saw Edwards sit out for years due to fight cancellations while Masvidal went on to twice fight for the world title.

But they will finally settle their differences on December 11 at UFC 269, on the undercard of a lightweight world title bout between Dustin Poirier and Charles Oliveira in Las Vegas.

“When you’re talking all this c*** and then somebody gets in your face, and you’re hesitant about it? You know exactly what’s going to happen if you come from these places,” Masvidal said of his altercation with Edwards during an appearance on The MMA Hour.

“You see I’m walking toward you and you’re walking toward me, and you’re going to say I assaulted you? That’s coward s***.”

Masvidal claims Edwards considered calling the police following the incident, which was captured on camera by a number of media outlets.

But he says that Edwards would have hurt his image had he done that, so he let the action continue.

Masvidal had just knocked out Darren Till in the main event of UFC London, while Edwards had won a split decision over Gunnar Nelson in the co-main.

“He was saying assault and he originally wanted to call the cops on me,” Masvidal continued.

“But what would have happened? That wouldn’t have looked good for his brand and ‘I’m such a tough guy,’ the thing that he’s trying to proclaim. So that’s when he didn’t want to call the cops.

“But originally they wanted to press charges on me, when you started this f***ing altercation.”

Masvidal was being interviewed by media after his upset win over Till when he was interrupted by Edwards, who he proceeded to walk towards and throw punches at in the backstage area.

“I’m here doing my own interview, doing my thing, I just got Fight of the Night, I just got Knockout of the Night, and I don’t give a f*** about you, Edwards,” he continued.

“Why are you ruining my interview? This is my time to shine, you’re trying to steal that, you’re trying to talk s***.

“Nobody gives a f*** about you in your own hometown.

“You just had a fight that night, nobody was even talking about his fight because it was so boring. And he’s just a clout chaser. That’s always what he’s been.

“I got into this sport because I actually love the sport, I love to fight, I love to compete. This guy got into the sport because, I don’t know, maybe he thought he could score a first date or something with some chick. It’s all going to show on December 11.”
