Jose Mourinho “blames” Mark Clattenburg for Chelsea sack according to ex-referee

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg claims Jose Mourinho blames him for his sacking by Chelsea.

Mourinho had led the Blues to the Premier League title in the 2014/15 season during his second stint at the club, but lasted just seven months longer in the post.

The Blues were 16th in the table at the time of his axing, having lost nine of their 16 league matches of the 2015/16 campaign.

His last act as manager came in a December defeat to eventual champions Leicester, where Clattenburg was the designated official.

And despite Mourinho admitting he was “ashamed” of his team’s performance post-match, it seems he holds Clattenburg to account instead.

Asked on Paddy Power’s From The Horses Mouth podcast whether any managers or teams bored a grudge against him, Clattenburg replied: “Jose Mourinho did, in the end.

“He was hard work when he came back from Real Madrid, and well, I got him the sack at Chelsea.

“Well, he blames me for getting him the sack at Chelsea – but I would say it was more all of the results before that, too.”

Frank Lampard’s team made waves during the summer by splashing over £250million to bring in the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva.

It has given them one of the Premier League’s most potent attacks – but behind them remains a defence that continues to leak goals, with 3-3 draws against West Brom and Southampton already behind them.

Clattenburg was still reffing in the top flight when Mourinho returned to the game as boss of Chelsea’s rivals, and he clearly hadn’t forgotten.

“When he [Mourinho] went to Manchester United, he was thinking the same thing – I’m going to get him the sack, so he was always anti-me.”

Though Clattenburg took such behaviour with a pinch of salt.

He added: “In general, managers like Sir Alex [Ferguson], at the time it was all about if they win you were the best referee in the world.

“There was only one team that really hated me when I was in the Football League, and that was Wigan.

“Wigan didn’t win for 13 matches, so it didn’t matter what I did, they never won.”
