Lukaku says Chelsea return was ‘opportunity of a lifetime’

Jose Mourinho has claimed Roma landing Tammy Abraham was “a real coup” with the former Chelsea star backed to be a hit in the Italian capital.

The Serie A side completed the £34million deal for the 23-year-old on Tuesday, who will become the club’s new No.9.

Abraham has been signed as Edin Dzeko’s replacement after the Bosnian surprised the Giallorossi by joining Inter Milan.

And the Roma boss has praised his owners for striking a deal for the 23-year-old during what he described as an “incredibly difficult market”.

“I have to say the general manager and owners have been brilliant,” said Mourinho on Roma TV.

“The reality is that we started pre-season thinking we had Dzeko and what happened was a bit of a surprise for all of us.

Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on his new signing

“In an incredibly difficult market and in a financial situation that is difficult for every, or more precisely, almost every club, having the willingness, the ambition, the respect for the fans’ emotions and reacting in this way after losing Dzeko and bringing in Tammy Abraham was a real coup.”

The 23-year-old has signed a five year deal at the Stadio Olimpico and Mourinho is totally confident that the ambitious striker will make his impact felt.

He added “I prefer to say wait and see for Tammy, but I say that with total confidence. I’ve known him since he was a boy. He never played for me, because he was a 14, 15, 16-year-old when I was at Chelsea, but I know him very well.

“I know him as a player, a person and in terms of mentality. It is always tough for an English player to leave his country and the Premier League, and that says so much about him.

“If you leave the Premier League, it’s because you are ambitious, because you want to get back into your national team, because you want to play at the World Cup and win outside of England, where not many English players have had brilliant careers.

Abraham completed his first Roma training session after being unveiled

Abraham joins Eldor Shomurodov and Borja Mayoral as Mourinho’s attacking options, with the Portuguese more than happy with the trio.

“We don’t have the experience you might see at Juventus with Cristiano Ronaldo, at Milan with Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, given they are all well-established, but in terms of potential, I couldn’t be happier with the players we have.”

After falling out of favour under Thomas Tuchel, Abraham admitted that he was more than happy to play for a club so desperate to acquire him.

“You can sense when a club really wants you – and Roma made their interest clear immediately,” said Abraham.

“Roma is a club that deserves to be fighting for titles and trophies. I’ve had the experience of winning major trophies and I want to be in those competitions again – so I want to help this team to achieve that and get to the level where Roma should be.

“It’s a massive honour to be the number nine at this club and I just can’t wait to get started and to help the team.”
