Jose Mourinho sends seething message to Tottenham stars on team bus after defeat

Jose Mourinho made his anger at Tottenham’s performance known with a message to his underperforming stars direct from the team bus.

The Spurs boss watched his side beaten 1-0 by Royal Antwerp away in Belgium in their Europa League clash on Thursday, and immediately set his sights on putting things right.

Mourinho had made nine changes to his starting XI from the side that beat Burnley, but swiftly made four more at half-time, dragging several players off after a dismal opening 45 minutes.

It did little to affect the result though, as a lacklustre Spurs failed to take the game to Antwerp and slumped to defeat.

Speaking directly after the match a furious Mourinho admitted he wanted to make 11 subs at half-time, and his anger spilled over to the car park as Tottenham were waiting to leave the stadium.

Mourinho was angry at the nature of Tottenham’s performance

Posting on his Instagram account, Mourinho wrote: “Bad perfomances deserve bad results.

“Hope everyone in this bus is as upset as I am. Tomorow 11 AM training.”

Spurs had fallen behind after 29 minutes in the clash at Bosuilstadion, as Lior Refaelov fired the hosts in front.

By half-time Mourinho had already seen enough and hauled four players off the field in an attempt to spark a revival.

Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso, Steven Bergwijn and Carlos Vinicius were all replaced at the break, before Gareth Bale was subbed off before the hour.

On came Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Erik Lamela – later followed by Harry Kane – but they could not find an equaliser.

Antwerp even had the better of the chances in the second half, leaving Mourinho spitting feathers at the final whistle.

“I would like to make 11 (changes at half-time),” Mourinho fumed. “I didn’t make five because I was afraid of a long 45 minutes.

“There is only one to blame, I chose the players to start.”

And it appears the substituted foursome may well be waiting some time before their next opportunity to impress.

Mourinho added: “Tonight my future choices are going to be very easy. It is my responsibility.

“Before matches you always ask me why this player is not playing, why this player is not playing, why this player is not selected.

“Maybe now for a few weeks you don’t ask me that because you have the answer.”
