Jose Mourinho’s David de Gea dig in message to Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Jose Mourinho has claimed Manchester United do not possess any “phenomenal goalkeepers” but believes Dean Henderson will be in the future.

The Special One was in charge at Old Trafford for two-and-a-half years before he was shown the door in December 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced him and has made every effort to manage his goalkeeper situation.

David de Gea, who was a star during Mourinho’s tenure, has shown signs of decline since Solskjaer took charge.

Errors have become an increasingly regular part of his game which saw calls for Henderson to come in and replace him.

Mourinho now believes that United are short of a world class goalkeeper but has backed the Englishman to eventually reach that level.

David de Gea has retained the faith of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“I think they are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal,” he told the Times.

“When I say not yet, I say he will be. I met him at [Manchester] United when he was a kid and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I come back to be the No 1.

“He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with an incredible self confidence and I think he is ready.”

Henderson was forced to play second fiddle to Da Gea for much of the season having returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United.

The Spaniard then returned to his homeland following the birth of his child which allowed his understudy to step up.

Henderson performed impressively and was afforded a run of games, but copped criticism for his display in the defeat to Liverpool.

Roy Keane highlighted the 24-year-old’s size as an issue, saying: “He looks so small in the goals, that’s my worry [over] Henderson.

“He has a good mentality, good temperament and is good with his feet, but I’ve seen a few goals go in recently where he looks so small in the goals.”

De Gea returned for United’s Europa League final defeat to Villarreal last month.

It was a decision that backfired as he failed to save any of the 11 spot kicks in the penalty shootout before missing the decisive one himself.

There are major doubts as to whether both De Gea and Henderson will still be at the club next season as they both seek regular minutes.
