Josh Warrington vs Mauricio Lara: Boxing preview

osh Warrington makes his eagerly-anticipated return to the ring tonight with a showdown against Mexico’s Mauricio Lara at The SSE Arena, Wembley.

‘The Leeds Warrior’ was last seen in action in October 2019, when he provided an impressive third defence of the IBF featherweight title won against Lee Selby in 2018 with a second-round finish of French challenger Sofiane Takoucht in his hometown.

The undefeated Warrington – who also memorably defended against Carl Frampton and then Kid Galahad before that – has since vacated his belt after the IBF refused to sanction a unification clash against WBA champion Xu Can.

While there is therefore no title on the line this weekend, it is still an important bout for the popular 30-year-old as he eyes huge battles down the line against the likes of Can, long-reigning WBC champion Gary Russell Jr and WBO title-holder Emanuel Navarrete.

Warrington vs Lara fight prediction

Defeat is not really an option for Warrington as he targets a big title showdown later in 2021.

Underdog Lara is a busy, capable fighter, but the Leeds favourite should have more than enough to come through this bout with a comfortable victory before moving on to greater things.

There may be some rust to shake off after 15 months without a match, but Warrington to still preserve his perfect professional record and improve to 31-0 via a lopsided points decision or late-round stoppage.

Warrington vs Lara betting odds

Warrington via KO/TKO: 1/2

Warrington via decision/technical decision: 2/1

Lara via KO/TKO: Between 11/1 & 12/1

Lara via decision/technical decision: 19/1
