Steven Gerrard appointed Aston Villa manager

Steven Gerrard is back in the Premier League.

The Liverpool legend has been announced as the new Aston Villa manager after three years in charge of Scottish side Rangers.

During his time at Ibrox, Gerrard led the club to its first league title in 10 years as he put the club back on top of Scottish football.

He’s now been announced as Dean Smith’s successor at Villa Park, although not everyone is happy about it.

But with a wealth of Premier League experience already, Gerrard can count on some familiar faces in the division to offer their advice as he gets used to his new surroundings.

One of those is Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has already told him who to build his Aston Villa team around.

Klopp offers Gerrard advice

Steven Gerrard can call on advice from Jurgen Klopp as he looks to get his Aston Villa career off to a flying start.

Gerrard’s predecessor, Dean Smith, struggled to get the best out of a talented squad and was sacked after a run of five straight defeats.

But the player who caught Klopp’s eye was playing for Villa last season, when they inflicted an astonishing 7-2 defeat on then-defending champions, Liverpool.

The former Liverpool and England captain has replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park, taking his first job in the Premier League.

But John Hartson, who played for Celtic between 2001 and 2006, believes Gerrard should’ve stayed at Rangers as they “would fit Aston Villa in their back pocket”.

Coutinho decision justified

Philippe Coutinho’s problems at Barcelona have continued this season with fitness and form issues continuing to mar his time at the Camp Nou.

The Brazilian playmaker became the Catalan club’s record signing back in January 2018 from Liverpool for a reported fee of £142million – a record sale for an English club.

That moment was in retrospect a key moment for player and club, as the Reds went on to win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title the following year, as Coutinho struggled to nail down a starting spot in Catalonia.

The 29-year-old spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Bayern Munich – helping them to the Champions League crown – but returned to Barca last year and has suffered from fitness problems since, and has now reportedly angered his teammates.
