Kamaru Usman’s manager wants to see him challenge boxing’s pound-for-pound No.1 Canelo Alvarez after his UFC 268 rematch against Colby Covington.

Usman defends his welterweight title for the fifth time at UFC 268 on November 6.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ defeated Covington two years ago, scoring the latest knockout in UFC title fight history as he stopped Covington with 50-seconds left in the fight.

Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz predicts Usman will get past his bitter rival Covington next month and transition to boxing.

But Abdelaziz wants Usman to face Alvarez instead of taking “fake” fights with celebrities or YouTubers.

He told MMA Fighting : “Nov. 6, Kamaru’s going to knockout Colby Covington and after that, I want him to do something crazy. I want him to beat up ‘Canelo’ (Alvarez) or somebody, why not?

Usman is undefeated in 19 fights

“Kamaru, he don’t want these fake fights. He wants a real fight and everybody in boxing is boxing these old guys.

“I was talking to him, he was like, ‘No, I want the pound-for-pound kings of MMA against the pound-for-pound kings of boxing.’ Why not? What does he have to lose? Nothing.”

UFC fighters such as Conor McGregor and Tyron Woodley have both failed in their crossovers from the octagon to the boxing ring.

But Abdelaziz is confident that Usman – who would have a considerable size advantage against Alvarez – would fair well against the Mexican.

“I think Kamaru will do well. Boxers fighting MMA guys have a hard time. We saw a guy like Conor, who simply has no soul — if he would have had a little more heart, he would have lasted a little bit longer, but he broke,” Abdelaziz continued.

“If you tell me Kamaru cannot last with ‘Canelo’ and rough him up, I tell you you’re wrong. I think Kamaru does very well with Canelo. At the end of the day, we just want to do bigger and better things, and of course, we are team players.

“We also work with Dana [White] and the UFC to do bigger things together as a team. Opportunities come, and if they come, we’re ready.”

Usman is not allowed to fight elsewhere whilst under contract with the UFC, so he will need White to grant him a one-off exemption if he is to challenge Alvarez.

And Abdelaziz explained why in his opinion Usman has surpassed Georges-St Pierre as the greatest UFC welterweight of all-time.

He continued: “The man has never been taken down. Georges cannot say that. We talk about dominance — Kamaru never lost in the UFC. Never even been a close fight in the UFC.

“Georges lost, close decisions, controversial decisions but he’s a legend. You have to give it Georges but I think Kamaru is the greatest welterweight of all-time now.”
