Kids get chance to impress before Moyes turns to January market for new defender

West Ham have lost first-choice centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma to long-term injuries in recent weeks and Moyes is reluctant to risk Craig Dawson and Issa Diop, the only fit central defenders at the club, with top spot in Group H already secured.

Harrison Ashby, 20, Ajibola Alese, 20, Jamal Baptiste, 18, and Emmanuel Longelo, 20 are set to line up in a defence made up entirely of academy prospects.

Ashby and Alese started in the Carabao Cup last season, but Baptiste and Longelo are set to make their full first-team debuts. Forward Sonny Perkins, 17, who featured off the bench at Rapid Vienna last month, is also set to be involved, as Moyes prepares to rest Michail Antonio.

“We will play some young players and I’m really looking forward to giving some of them their debuts,” said the Scot.

“The young players deserve any opportunities they get, because they have been doing so well, so some of them will get chance to step up and show what they can do.”

Fringe senior players will also be given a chance to impress, with Nikola Vlasic and Alex Kral set to start in midfield.
