Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that the club could sign a new centre-back before the January transfer window slams shut, saying: “I’m not picky but we need to find the right player.”
The Reds have seen their Premier League title defence hampered by injury problems in defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees.
Makeshift defender Fabinho missed their 3-1 win over Tottenham on Thursday evening with a muscle problem and Joel Matip was forced off at half-time with an ankle ligament injury.
That left midfielder Jordan Henderson and the inexperienced Nat Phillips to see out the game and, despite claiming ahead of the fixture that he ‘did not expect anything to happen’ in terms of transfers this month, that situation could now change.
Speaking after the win, Klopp told reporters: “You can imagine that we can think about everything. We think the whole time it’s about doing the right thing. I’m not picky but we need to find the right player.”
Although Matip’s injury provides Klopp with another headache, he was delighted with Liverpool’s victory over Spurs, telling BT Sport: “It was a great game, super intense.
“We scored the goals in the right moments, scored wonderful goals, the right people scored the goals. So, all good apart from, obviously, Joel Matip had to go off.”
When asked if the game signalled a return to form, Klopp replied: “What I saw today, it is not about shape or form actually. It’s who we are and that’s us. Second-half especially that was us.
“It was a massive fight and football on top of that. I don’t know the numbers but I think apart from a few minutes in the first-half I don’t remember they had a lot of the ball.
“It was always pretty quick and counter-attacking and we defended that really well. It was just a good performance and we saw a lot of things I wanted to see.”
