Is Premier League title race set to be wide open?

Jurgen Klopp is anticipating a hotly contested Premier League title race, with a number of clubs vying for top spot.

Liverpool are looking to wrestle back the league crown after a spate of injuries derailed their hopes of retaining it last term.

Manchester City ultimately coasted to their third league title in four seasons, finishing a full 12 points ahead of closest rivals Manchester United.

But in the wake of Chelsea, United and City’s big summer spending spree, the Reds boss is expecting a tighter looking table.

“Last year, the gap [at the top] was pretty big. The year before, with us, it was pretty big. Chelsea, Man United and Man City aren’t hiding expectations – and neither are we.

“It will not only be these four: Leicester made good business again, Arsenal are trying.”

So far, Liverpool have made just one summer signing, bringing in central defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

However, in comparison to their title rivals, it has been a relatively lean window, with the majority of the huge transfers happening elsewhere.

United look set to go into the new campaign bolstered by the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, while Chelsea and City have both broken club records to sign Romelu Lukaku and Jack Grealish respectively.

Klopp suggested that Liverpool were conducting their transfer business in a completely different environment to some of their closest rivals, leaving the German suitably perplexed.

“We all know the situation of Chelsea, City and PSG. What United are doing, I don’t know how they did it,” he added.

“We have our own way to do it. We are allowed to spend the money we earn. This year we spent before we earned money by buying Konate.

“It’s not about me being surprised [by rival spending], I’ve been here long enough to know they always find a solution to these things.

“We cannot compare to the other clubs. They obviously don’t have any limits. We have limits.”

Recent reports have suggested that it is unlikely Liverpool will bring in any further recruits before the window closes, unless there is significant funds raised by player exits.

That means they will go into the 2021/22 season having not replaced Gini Wijnaldum, who departed following the expiry of his contract.

Asked about a potential replacement for the Dutchman, he sharply responded: “Gini was the most consistently available player.

“I loved his way of playing and how reliable he was. But he’s not here anymore. You tell me if you would sign a midfielder, and I will think about it.

“You tell me which player we need. I’m really interested. What type of player would you like to sign?

“Should he score more goals than Gini? Should he defend better than Fabinho? Be more creative than Naby [Keita], Curtis [Jones], Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] and Harvey [Elliott]?”
