Transfer update: Arsenal ‘plan’ player-plus-cash Maddison move

Alexandre Lacazette is linked with a move away from Arsenal, and AS Roma have registered their interest, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Lacazette has had an inconsistent four-year period at Arsenal but found decent goalscoring form last season with 13 league goals.

The Frenchman has a great off-the-field relationship with fellow striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is the Gunners’ top earner making a staggering £250,000 per week.

Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his forward options ahead of the new season and has expressed an interest in Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who will be available for around £40million, according to reports.

There is a danger that Lacazette might find himself surplus to requirements at the Emirates and is on the hunt for pastures new.

However, the chances of Lacazette ending up with Jose Mourinho at Roma seem in doubt after Lacazette has set specific conditions for clubs vying for his signature.

It is reported that the French striker would only look to leave the Emirates this summer if a Champions League club comes calling, a competition that Roma failed to qualify ahead of the coming season.

In addition, it is believed that there is a fraught relationship between Jose Mourinho’s side and Arsenal due to Roma’s failed attempts to sign Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka earlier in the summer.

Mourinho had identified the volatile midfield player as his priority target this summer, and Xhaka had reportedly agreed to terms with the Serie A club.

However, talks broke down, and Xhaka remained an Arsenal player and is in line to sign a new contract to stay at the north London club until 2024, according to The Athletic.

Arsenal concluded their pre-season preparations with a disappointing 1-0 away loss to arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, with familiar foe Heung-Min Son scoring the winner on the 79th minute.

This is Arsenal’s second pre-season defeat to a London rival, falling to Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates earlier in the summer.

Following their defeat to Spurs, Arteta reflected on his limited options in the final third: “What we have is what we have to maximise. Worrying about things we don’t have at the moment is no point.

“I don’t know what will happen. We train with the players we have that are available. We try to improve the team with players. The window is still open.”

Arteta will hope to quickly bounce back from their embarrassing defeats ahead of their visit to Premier League new boys Brentford on Friday 13 August.

Elsewhere, Roma are now expected to turn their attentions to Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi, who is reportedly open to returning to Italy on a two-year loan deal.

The Argentine striker scored the winning goal for PSG in a 2-1 victory against Troyes in their opening game of the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season.
