Lampard favourite to be next England U21 manager after Euro exit

Boothroyd’s side lost their opening two group matches but were on the brink of pulling off a minor miracle in their final game, leading Croatia 2-0 with results elsewhere going their way, only for a stoppage time screamer from Domagoj Bradarić to knock them out.

It is the second tournament in a row in which Boothroyd has failed to reach the knockout stages despite a talented squad, and though the 50-year-old insisted afterwards that he is still the right man for the job, it remains to be seen whether the FA will come to the same conclusion, with his contract up in the summer.

Lampard has been out of work since being replaced by Thomas Tuchel in January, but during a relatively brief managerial career has already developed a reputation for harvesting young English talent, with the likes of Mason Mount and Reece James breaking into the senior Chelsea and England sides under his tutelage.

Eddie Howe is second favourite for the job, having left Bournemouth after their relegation from the top flight last season, while Chris Wilder is another name in contention, the former Sheffield United manager having left his post last month with the Blades destined for the drop.
