Lewandowski on target ahead of England clash; Olmo bails out Spain

stoppage time winner from Dani Olmo spared Spain’s blushes against Georgia, while Robert Lewandowski warmed up for a clash with England by firing Poland to a comfortable win over Andorra in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying action.

Spain had already gotten their campaign off to a slow start after drawing to Greece in their opening game and things looked set to get worse when they went behind in Tbilisi to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s goal. Man City star Ferran Torres equalised midway through the second-half but Luis Enrique’s side continued to struggle to create chances despite dominating possession, until substitute Olmo’s 92nd minute strike.

Poland, potentially England’s major rivals in Group I, had also drawn their opening game, against Hungary, but made light work of overcoming minnows Andorra, with Lewandowski scoring twice in a 3-0 win. The Poles now head to Wembley on Wednesday for a game that already looks likely to hold large sway in who tops the group.

Ryan Fraser’s second half strike saw Scotland come from behind to earn a point against Israel with a 1-1 draw in a match played in front of 5,000 fans at Tel Aviv’s Bloomfield Stadium. Elsewhere in the same group, Denmark hammered Moldova 8-0, Brentford midfielder Mathias Jensen on target with his first international goal.

Italy and Germany both maintained their 100 per cent starts to qualifying, the former beating Bulgaria 2-0 while the latter were workmanlike in seeing off Romania with a 1-0 win thanks to Serge Gnabry’s goal.

Away from World cup qualifying, Borussia Dortmund youngster Giovanni Reyna and Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic were both on the scoresheet as USA beat Northern Ireland 2-1 in a friendly at Windsor Park.
