Gary Lineker aimed a ruthless social media put-down at Piers Morgan after the latter’s bold Arsenal prediction got off to the worst possible start.
The vocal Arsenal supporter was clearly feeling optimistic and wrote: “I think we’re going to beat Manchester City. #afc.”
But Morgan was left with egg on his face only 76 seconds into the match as Raheem Sterling headed the visitors into the lead at the Emirates.
Match of the Day presenter Lineker saw the chance to aim a jibe at his long-term Twitter rival and responded: “Good start, mystic Morgan.”
Morgan did not respond to Lineker’s mocking message and instead vented his fury about the soft goal Arsenal conceded.
Riyad Mahrez was not pressured by Kieran Tierney and had plenty of time to pick out Sterling.
The England international only stands at 5’7″ but managed to out-jump 6’2″ defender Rob Holding to give Pep Guardiola’s side the advantage in the second minute.
Should Holding have done more in the build-up to Sterling’s goal? Have your say in the comments.
“Sterling is seven inches shorter than Holding… and out-jumped him by two feet,” wrote a furious Morgan. “Utterly ridiculous.”
The Good Morning Britain presenter added two angry emojis and also shared a clip from The Shining showing Jack Nicholson smashing plates to emphasise his fury over Arsenal conceding so early.
Morgan was not finished there and tweeted again after the Gunners failed to make any inroads during the first 30 minutes.
The 55-year-old wrote: “How can Arsenal ‘look tired’ after 25 b***** minutes? I did 45 minutes on my Peloton this morning and still found the energy to throw the remote at the TV when Sterling scored.”
Sterling’s header means he has scored four goals in his last five Premier League meetings with Arsenal, including three goals in three trips to north London.
