Lingard makes dressing room claim as Solskjaer appears to make transfer U-turn

Jesse Lingard was once again instrumental for West Ham as the Hammers secured a comeback win against West Brom on Wednesday evening.

David Moyes’ side might have missed out on a Champions League spot next season, but they are determined to seal a top-six finish.

Their three points at the Hawthorns means they are now in control of their own destiny heading into their final Premier League game of the season against Southampton as Spurs lost to Aston Villa.

Lingard was at the heart of everything good for West Ham, like he has been since day one following his loan move from Manchester United, as he set up Michail Antonio to claim a 3-1 victory against the Baggies.

And the midfielder revealed there was plenty of emotion shown in the dressing room at full time as the players were fully aware of the significance of the three points.

Lingard told West Ham TV: “It wasn’t pretty, I’ll tell you that. The boys are in the dressing room celebrating a big win.

“We stuck together through the hard times. We knew it was going to be difficult against West Brom. It is always difficult coming here, especially the first time with fans back, which is amazing. They were going to get behind them and show support for them to win the game.

“I thought we were calm and composed in certain aspects, especially towards the end when we broke [and scored our third goal]. We were waiting for that opportunity all game to get a three vs two with the defenders.

“It was just about timing, with the run from Mich to keep himself onside. He did that, and then it was about my weight of pass into his path to hit it first time.

“The lads showed courage, fight and great character to come back.”

Lingard has one game left for West Ham before he returns to Old Trafford but his future remains in doubt.

The latest reports suggest Man Utd are looking to offload the playmaker despite his impressive form since January.

The only feasible opportunity for West Ham to sign him on a permanent basis is if they were to give up Declan Rice in a swap deal.

United are looking to use Lingard as a makeweight to land their summer targets or put the funds from his sale towards their transfer kitty.

If that’s the case, it will be a major U-turn for the Red Devils as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear he would welcome Lingard back to United last month.

He said: “Jesse has been brilliant since he left and I’ve answered this quite a few times. Selfishly we could have kept him because he’s always got a part to play.

“Jesse is a fantastic lad around the place, Man United through and through. Never once did he moan or cause me a problem, he just came in and worked really hard. He deserved a chance to play for more football – that’s why we let him go to West Ham because he deserves a chance for what he’s done throughout his life for Man United. Of course we [will] welcome him back.

“I hope he will go to the Euros because with his performances now, with the confidence he’s got, I don’t think that’s beyond him. I hope he’s got a strong finish to the league.

“It was different here because Bruno [Fernandes], the form he’s played in, arguably in Jesse’s favourite position, and that was just a decision that we’ve made. Delighted though for Jess and just wish him all the best for the rest of the season until he comes back.”
