Manchester United star Jesse Lingard fired back at fans allegedly hurling abuse at him from the touchline as United slumped to an embarrassing 5-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah continued his sensational run of form by netting a hat-trick as the Reds ran riot in Manchester.

Naby Keita slotted the Reds into a fifth-minute lead before Diogo Jota doubled it just minutes later.

Salah struck twice before half time before dinking home his third minutes after the break to cap a magnificent performance from Jurgen Klopp ‘s men.

Paul Pogba was dismissed just 15 minutes after coming as a second substitute for a wild lunge on Keita to compound a nightmare afternoon for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

The chants towards Lingard came as Old Trafford reached boiling point after seeing their side embarrassed by their bitter rivals.

A host of fans appeared to walk out of the stadium at the break with United already 4-0 down.

And there were deafening boos as Solskjaer and his side left the pitch at the break.

But despite Liverpool adding to their tally after the break, Solskjaer was treated to a generous reception from fans as he departed the field.

The Norwegian was on the end of ironic chants from Liverpool fans, who urged United to stick with the beleaguered boss as they mocked their stricken hosts.

Solskjaer’s game plan was torn apart both on and off the pitch, with Liverpool making light work of United’s uncoordinated attempts to press the Reds.

A lack of cohesion opened up gaps that Liverpool ruthlessly exploited to take the early advantage, with Salah enjoying the freedom of Manchester to perfectly play in Keita to set the tone for the afternoon.

United icon Gary Neville was particularly scathing of United’s plan for the big game, insisting that Solskjaer had got his selection wrong in failing to press effectively against Klopp’s side.

Although Lingard failed to get on the pitch, he has impressed in his fleeting cameo roles for United this term after a sterling spell on loan at West Ham last season.

And Neville believes he would have been a better bet to carry out Solskjaer’s plan if he wanted to press effectively from the front against Liverpool.

“Rashford, Ronaldo, Greenwood. You’re not gonna win the ball with those three, you’re not gonna press,” Neville said during his in-game commentary for Sky Sports.

“If you want to press, put Jesse Lingard in.”
