Fulham picked up a massive three points in the fight to stay in the Premier League as they secured a memorable 1-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool’s torrid home run continues – the Reds have now lost six league games in a row at Anfield, havign never previously lost more than four in a row prior to this run.
Mario Lemina’s strike on the stroke of half-time proved decisive, robbing Mo Salah of possesion and firing into the far corner.
It was nothing like a smash and grab though, with the Cottagers having been on top throughout the first 45 minutes as the bossed a Liverpool team that included seven changes from the defeat to Chelsea in midweek.
The home side improved after the break as Jurgen Klopp sent on the likes of Sadio Mane and Trent-Alexander Arnold but Fulham defended magnificently, Joachim Andersen making a crucial intervention in stoppage time to deny Mane a leveller.
Klopp denies Liverpool lack desire
Liverpool boss Klopp insisted his players were not suffering a lack of desire, after Reed insisted they had wanted victory more than the hosts.
“The winner’s always right; my boys wanted it,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “Wanted it more? It’s easy to judge. They have won it so they wanted it more. But I don’t think that’s a problem.
“For sure it’s confidence for us, we never had momentum in the season in the Premier League really, and you can see that. It’s still in the boys there, they have it all, but at the moment they can’t show it.
“It would be a masterpiece to find out how we change that overnight. But luckily we have a different competition in three days, and hopefully we can show a different face.
“We had to make changes today because some of the players were just not able to go again. I don’t have to stand here and say we are fighting for this or that.
“We have enough to do just fighting for three points. It’s not about a proper target now, we have to win football games and that’s what we’ll try to do.
“It’s a tough one to take for all of us.”
Carragher: Results ‘not acceptable’ at Liverpool
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher pulled no punches in his appraisal of the Reds’ continued crisis in the wake of the 1-0 home loss to Fulham.
As Klopp’s men slipped to a record-extending sixth straight home league defeat at Anfield, Carragher conceded the side’s current plight cannot be tolerated.
“Jurgen Klopp previously called this team mentality monsters and that was absolutely right at the time,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“But right now they are like mentality midgets.
“This team is just not dealing well with adversity at any point in the last four months.
“And that’s just not acceptable at Liverpool.”
Parker ‘unbelievably proud’ of Fulham
Parker hailed his side’s resolve in continuing to stay in the fight to avoid the Premier League drop.
“I thought we were every bit of what I wanted in the first half,” Parker told Sky Sports.
“I wanted us to come here and stand up to what they would throw at us.
“And I’m unbelievably proud of our players today.”
A huge roar from Scott Parker, who was losing his rag as we ticked into a seventh minute of stoppage time with a Liverpool corner there.
That is six, yes SIX, home league defeats in a row for Liverpool.
FULL-TIME | Liverpool 0-1 Fulham
90+2 mins: Brilliant defending!
Robertson gets round the back post and volleys across the face of goal where Mane is waiting for a tap-in but Andersen slides in to clear.
90+1 mins: There’ll be four minutes of added time…
90 mins: Final minute of normal time – can Fulham hang on?
85 mins: It’s going to be a proper siege this – Fulham can’t make anything stick and the ball keeps coming back. Perhaps that’s why Aleksandar Mitrovic is being thrown on, in place of Cavaleiro.
82 mins: Another Fulham change – Antonee Robinson is on in place of Ademola Lookman.
