Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City discover potential Champions League opponents

Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea will fly the flag for the Premier League in the last-16 of the Champions League.

Manchester United’s elimination leaves only three English teams in the elite European competition entering the knockout stages.

Whilst the Red Devils will drop into the Europa League, their three domestic rivals were all able to top their groups.

That puts them in a favourable position as they are in line to face one of the other eight runners-up in the last-16.

They will avoid fellow group winners Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain when the draw for the last-16 takes place on Monday, December 14.

But there are still some tough ties which could lie ahead – including Lionel Messi and Barcelona, who finished runners-up to Juventus in Group G.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are also in contention after seeing off Red Bull Salzburg to finish runners-up in their Group A whilst last year’s semi-finalists, RB Leipzig, could face more English opposition after beating Manchester United to third place in Group H.

Teams also cannot be drawn against teams from the same group at this stage, meaning Liverpool will avoid Atalanta, Manchester City will avoid Porto and Chelsea will avoid Sevilla.

Those who can navigate the last-16, will then face a free-for-all with the remaining teams all eligible to face each other from the quarter-finals onwards.

The first legs of the last-16 ties are due to take place on February 16/17 and February 23/24 with the second legs on March 9/10 and March 16/17.

The quarter-finals are slated for April 6/7 and April 13/14 with the semi-finals on April 27/28 and May 4/5.

All roads lead to Istanbul for the Champions League final set to take place in Istanbul on May 29.
