Liverpool complete signing of centre-back Davies from Preston North End

Liverpool have completed the deadline day signing of centre-back Ben Davies from Preston for a fee that could reach around £1.6m.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted the club were in the market for a late addition to his defence after Fabinho and Joel Matip joined Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the injury list.

And they moved quickly to secure the services of Davies, 25, who has impressed in the Championship this season.

Davies came through the ranks at Deepdale and has gone on to make more than 200 appearances for the Championship club, but was in the last six months of his contract at Preston when Liverpool swooped.

He has been an ever-present again this season, helping his side to 11th in the table, but it will be intriguing to see if he is able to make the step up to performing at the highest level.

The likes of Celtic and Bournemouth had been linked with Davies in the past.

Liverpool are also closing in on a loan deal for Ozan Kabak having previously come close to signing another defender.

Reports in France claim the Reds were hot on the heels of Duje Caleta-Car and even struck a deal with Marseille over a switch.

The 24-year-old was all set to fly to the UK on Sunday to put pen to paper on a contract with Liverpool, but the plug was pulled at the last minute.

It is believed Marseille wanted to secure a replacement before agreeing to let the centre-back leave, and were unable to do this.

Davies could be in line to make his Anfield debut when Liverpool take on Brighton on Wednesday, and may then have a true baptism of fire if he is involved in the huge weekend clash between the Reds and fellow title-challengers Manchester City.
