Liverpool ‘contact’ Ousmane Dembele as Darwin Nunez transfer lifeline emerges

Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele has emerged as a potential transfer target for Liverpool, while the Reds have been urged not to improve their current offer to Mohamed Salah

Barcelona contract rebel Ousmane Dembele has been linked with a move to Liverpool

Liverpool have enjoyed a remarkable season under Jurgen Klopp, but the Reds will already be plotting to go one better next year after coming up short in the Premier League title race.

Even before Saturday night’s seismic showdown with Real Madrid in the Champions League final, the Reds have been linked with a host of potential signings – and speculation will continue to ramp up now that Liverpool’s season is finally done and dusted.

Given that the speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane is also expected to rumble on in the coming weeks, it could be an interesting summer in the transfer market at Anfield. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at all of the latest transfer rumours involving Liverpool

Reds ‘contact’ Ousmane Dembele

Barcelona contract rebel Ousmane Dembele has still not decided where his future lies -and Anfield has now emerged as a potential destination for the 25-year-old, according to a new report.

SPORT are claiming that Liverpool have ‘finally contacted’ Dembele’s entourage to ‘sound out’ the attacker, who is due to be a free agent at the end of next month. Chelsea are another club who the report claim are monitoring Dembele’s situation, while Barcelona are still attempting to persuade the French international to stay at the Nou Camp.

The report goes on to claim that Liverpool are interested in snapping up Dembele as ‘it is more than likely’ that Mane will join Bayern Munich this summer, while it is also suggested that Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino is ‘on the transfer list’. Paris Saint-Germain are also pursuing a summer deal for Dembele, who joined Barca for a whopping £105million back in 2017.

Former Liverpool shot-stopper David James has urged the Reds to stand their ground in the ongoing contract row with Salah. The Egyptian attacker recently confirmed that he has no plans to quit Anfield this summer, but Salah and the Reds are currently at an impasse over a new deal.

However, James is adamant that his old club shouldn’t up their current offer – even if it means Salah quits the club for nothing next summer. While discussing the situation involving Salah and Mane, James told GOAL: “As a Liverpool fan you want them to stay. You want your best players to stay and they have proved themselves as two of Liverpool’s best players.

“I would suggest that the Liverpool model and recruitment strategy is that they anticipate the players being there at the same time as anticipating them not being there. With the latter, they will anticipate the next acquisition – like [Luis] Diaz coming in during January. They will already have something in place, then you have to look at the individuals.

“I think the fact that Salah hasn’t signed the contract that has been offered, I don’t think he should or would get a better offer because Liverpool will have that as part of their model. Then it is down to the player.

Liverpool have been handed a lifeline in their pursuit of a new forward, with a new report claiming that Jurgen Klopp’s side and Real Madrid are the frontrunners in the race to sign Darwin Nunez.

Portuguese publication Record, via SportWitness, have revealed that both the Reds and Real are ‘two of the main contenders’ in the race to snap up the coveted Benfica striker – and that the outcome of the Champions League final could play a huge role in deciding Nunez’s future.

Nunez is expected to leave Portugal in the summer after notching 34 goals in 41 games. Benfica are set to demand around €100m (£85m) for their star man, with the report claiming that his future will be sorted ‘after the Champions League final’.
