Jurgen Klopp ’s Liverpool are facing a nightmare scenario over the future of Mohamed Salah with the Egyptian open to remaining in the Premier League should he leave Anfield.

The Egyptian forward is out of contract next summer and whilst he has indicated his desire to remain on Merseyside for the upcoming season at the very least, his long-term future is a different topic entirely.

According to The Athletic, little progress has been made regarding negotiations over a new deal and Salah has expressed his preference over his next potential destination. The report claims he is prioritising a Premier League move instead of a switch abroad, should he elect to leave Anfield on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.

Of course, that then begs the question over who would be interested in making a move for the Egyptian. A return to Chelsea has been tentatively mentioned in the past, whilst nouveau-riche Newcastle – as well as Liverpool’s fierce rivals Manchester United – would no doubt be able to meet his lofty wage demands.

However, those situations are not quite the nightmare scenario that the Reds could feasibly face. That is because Manchester City would likely be at the front of the queue for Salah next year – and that could be hugely damaging for the Reds.

Having gone face-to-face with Pep Guardiola ’s men on the domestic and European stages over the past few years, Salah switching to the Etihad Stadium would only strengthen City whilst also weakening their principal title rival.

Should Liverpool meet Mohamed Salah’s contract demands? Have your say in the comments below.

After all, this is a player who has scored a stunning 156 goals in just 254 appearances for the Reds and helped the Merseyside club to three Champions League finals, the Premier League title, as well as the FA and Carabao Cups. The prospect of him lining up alongside the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne in Manchester is certainly a frightening prospect.

That union could well see Liverpool fall further behind the reigning English champions in the battle for honours having only just been edged out by City on the final day of the season. And there is no doubt that as Salah continues to push for major trophies, the Sky Blues are, at present, the only viable alternative in England to satisfy his desire.

In a further blow for Liverpool in their nightmare scenario, they would miss out on a huge fee should Salah leave Anfield next year. In the past, the Reds have managed to rake in considerable funds by selling players at the right time.

For instance, the sales of Philippe Coutinho, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez were all a blow at the time but it is hard to argue that the Reds have not benefited from the reported £260million in fees paid out by Barcelona and Chelsea respectively.

This time, the same cannot be said of Salah. Were he in contract, the 29-year-old would no doubt command a huge fee. Instead, he is set to leave on a free. And he would no doubt be a weapon that City would be all too grateful to take, both to improve their attack and weaken their main rival.

With the need to replace Sadio Mane this summer too – the Senegalese reported to have expressed his desire to leave the club amid interest from Bayern Munich – the news over Salah’s intention will be a bitter pill for Klopp and Liverpool to swallow. So, whilst the Egyptian has given the club and its supporters dream moments throughout his time in front of the Kop, his latest decision leaves Liverpool facing a calamitous outcome.
