Liverpool ‘looking close to home’ as search for Wijnaldum replacement steps up

Wijnaldum bid farewell to Liverpool fans following his final appearance for the club on Sunday and looks set to head to the Nou Camp as thoughts now turn to who call fill the void at Anfield

Liverpool could be poised to swoop for Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans in their bid to replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Reds have allowed Wijnaldum to depart this summer after failing to agree to his contract demands with his deal due to expire next month.

Several top clubs have been linked with the Dutchman but it is expected he will complete a move to long-term admirers Barcelona to link up with former international boss Ronald Koeman, providing he keeps his job at the Nou Camp.

Losing a player of Wijnaldum’s quality on a free transfer is a bitter blow to the club’s transfer department as they now seek possible replacements on a budget which has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

But they could well shop close to home as Belgian news outlet Het Nieuwsblad claim Liverpool are weighing up a move for Foxes’ star Tielemans.

The 24-year-old has impressed in the Premier League since moving to the King Power Stadium two years ago.

Tielemans could have been acquired for £40million last year when his loan spell came to an end , but it was Leicester who stumped up the cash and have reaped the rewards since.

Foxes’ boss Brendan Rodgers has no intentions of letting the central midfielder go, particularly after his match-winning strike in the FA Cup final wrote his name into the club’s history books.

But like all good players, Tielemans has a desire to play in the Champions League and, after Leicester failed to qualify for the second season in succession, he may now be open to a switch elsewhere.

Following their defeat to Tottenham on the final day, he was seen walking round the pitch doing a lap of honour by himself – a sign that many feel he could be on his way this summer.

Leicester would not want to let him go on the cheap, as their previous negotiations over Harry Maguire proves, but they could be willing to accept a suitable offer given Tielemans has just two years remaining on his contract, meaning now is the best time to sell him if they want to attract a big fee.

Liverpool’s need for a midfielder is not hugely urgent seeings as they only signed Thiago Alcantara last summer and have a number of players who can play that role in their squad, including Curtis Jones who has made great strides this season.

However Jurgen Klopp may not wish to enter the new campaign without landing a replacement for Wijnaldum, given two of his options are injury-prone duo Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.

At 35, James Milner is not getting any younger either, and he will need to be replaced in the short to medium term anyway.

It appears Klopp has already lined up his first piece of business for the summer, as Red Bull Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate is expected to join, providing Liverpool agree to pay his release clause – believed to be in the region of £35-40million.
