Klopp ‘not surprised’ by Elliott display for Liverpool in win

Liverpool tried to end Philippe Coutinho ’s Barcelona hell by bringing him back to Anfield, according to sensational reports from Spain.

It was reported by Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Jurgen Klopp’s side attempted to re-sign their former hero in the ongoing window.

Spanish journalist Lluis Canut, claims Coutinho had “been probed by Liverpool, to live a second stage”.

The 29-year-old midfielder spent five productive years with The Reds, before embarking on a new journey in Catalonia after sealing a £121 million move to La Blaugrana.

However, his time at the Nou Camp has not gone to plan, with the Brazilian winger failing to make the impact his substantial transfer fee commands.

Reports from Spain suggested Liverpool were interested in bringing Coutinho back to Anfield

After a stuttering first season, he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich where he enjoyed a treble winning campaign; contributing with 11 goals and nine assists in 38 appearances.

He even went on to score two goals against Barcelona, as the Bavarians humiliated his then parent club 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-finals – unfortunately for him Bayern could not commit to a permanent transfer.

Coutinho returned to the Nou Camp, but his luck did not improve as he only made 14 appearances in all competitions last season.

However, despite his torrid time with the five-time European Champions, his fortunes could be set to turn.

There have been reports suggesting Lionel Messi’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain could potentially lead to The Catalans giving the Argentine’s legendary No.10 shirt to the Brazilian.

It would be a remarkable turnaround for Coutinho, who is highly rated by current Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman.

It is believed the Dutchman was a huge admirer of the former Inter Milan star when he managed Southampton and Everton in the Premier League.

But nothing is off the table just yet as Barcelona is still desperately trying to shift some unwanted stars in order to reduce their cataclysmic salary bill.

While Gerard Pique’s reduction in salary did free up enough space to allow the likes of Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia to be registered, they are still struggling.

It is believed Barcelona president Joan Laporta will soon be requesting both Coutinho and his attacking colleague Antoine Griezmann to reduce their enormous salaries, according to SPORT.

Griezmann alone is estimated to earn a whopping £500,000 per week pre-tax, with the Brazilian not too far behind.

Laporta recently carried out a press conference where he broke down in detail the club’s seismic £1.15 billion.

Coutinho and Griezmann are reportedly the club’s highest earners now

“It is an exercise in despair,” said Laporta.

“We have a salary bill that represents 103 per cent of the club’s total income.

“It represents 20-25 per cent more than our competitors. No one is going to escape from those responsibilities.

“The economic situation is worrying, and the financial situation is dramatic.”

Since Messi’s exit, Coutinho and Griezmann have taken over as the club’s highest earners.

Other Barcelona senior players Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto are soon expected to follow Pique and take salary cuts of their own.
