Curtis Jones scored the only goal as Liverpool defeated Ajax at Anfield, to both book their place in the last 16 and ensure they will be among the top seeds after winning Group D.
Jurgen Klopp handed a Champions League debut to 22-year-old goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, selected ahead of Adrian with Alisson out injured.
Both sides looked to get on the front foot from the off, with both looking to take the game to their opponents.
And after both sides had hit the post, Curtis Jones in the first half and David Neres in the second, it was the hosts who took the lead after a misjudgment by Andre Onana.
The Ajax goalkeeper came for Neco Williams’ inswinging cross from the right but appeared to decide it was sailing out and left it.
That allowed Jones to sneak in behind him at the far post and turn the ball home for his first Champions League goal.
Onana made up for his error shortly after, denying Mohamed Salah as he went clean through following an error from Perr Schuurs.
Liverpool looked most likely to nab the game’s second goal but it was substitute Klaas Jan Huntelaar who almost snatched an equaliser late in the day, his header denied by Kelleher.
Here are player ratings from Anfield…
