Liverpool have turned down the opportunity to sign Ozan Kabak for £8.5m after his loan spell came to an end.
The centre-half headed to Anfield in January as the Reds sought to solve their defensive injury crisis.
Kabak returned to parent club Schalke following the season’s conclusion after Liverpool opted against activating a £18m purchase option.
The German club have now returned and offered the Turkish international for less than half that original fee.
Schalke were relegated from the Bundesliga and are desperate to offload Kabak, reports Goal.
Jurgen Klopp though has already added Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig for over £30m and is preparing to welcome back Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Joel Matip, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips are also options meaning the Reds are unlikely to take up Schalke’s offer.
Kabak made 13 appearances for the Reds and formed a solid partnership with Phillips in the final weeks of the season as Liverpool made a late surge for the top four.
He earned particular praise for his performances in the last 16 of the Champions League and Klopp was keen to praise the defender.
“Ozan was absolutely incredible, he did a great job and not to forget he is a young, young, young boy with incredible experience already,” said the Liverpool boss back in May.
“He was in different clubs, moved early from Turkey to Germany. Played in two big clubs in Germany in difficult situations, which is obviously not his fault.
“We could all see when he arrived here he needed a little bit of time to adapt. Then he played super games for us; I don’t want to pick any games out, but the two Leipzig games were absolutely incredible if you think how good Leipzig can be.”
Upon leaving the 21-year-old penned an emotional message which read: “Dear Liverpool family, I would like to thank you for the compassion and support you have shown towards me since the day I arrived. I believe the experience I have gathered during my four-month stay here has been a very important one.
“I have learned a lot from my manager Jürgen Klopp and all my teammates and I was proud to be part of this special family. I will always remember my days here at Liverpool with great happiness and the special song which you have kindly gifted me.
