Like most Premier League clubs, Liverpool have had a quiet January transfer window with no major incomings or outgoings.
There have been a whole host of players linked with moves to and from Anfield but it appeared as though the Reds were willing to wait until the summer before dipping into the transfer market.
Manager Jurgen Klopp had said that he was not expecting “anything to happen” before the January window came to an end but that situation may now change after Fabinho missed the game against Tottenham with an injury and Joel Matip was forced off with ankle ligament problem.
Here is the latest transfer news coming out of Anfield.
Klopp issues fresh January transfer call
Klopp has revealed that the club could sign a new centre-back, saying after their win over Tottenham: “I’m not picky but we need to find the right player.”
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees, they were already short at the back but with Fabinho missing the game with a muscle problem and Matip going off at half-time with an injury that Klopp says “looks serious”, Liverpool’s hand may be forced.
Speaking to reporters, Klopp said: “You can imagine that we can think about everything. We think the whole time it’s about doing the right thing. I’m not picky but we need to find the right player.”
Reds urged to sign Upamecano
Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch believes RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is “one of the best in Europe” and urged the Reds to try and bring him to Anfield.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Crouch said: “Everyone in football can see that they need a centre-half. You’d think they would bring someone in before the deadline. But we can’t criticise Liverpool’s transfer policy.
“It’s been unbelievable over the past couple of years, the players they’ve brought in and have improved. If it’s not the correct centre-half they won’t bring him in and the policy has gone well so far.
“There are so many top centre-halves out there. Upamecano is a top centre-half, I think he’s one of the best in Europe. He’s the best one out there if they can possibly get him.”
Liverpool told to ‘do all they can to sign Haaland’
Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged Jurgen Klopp to ‘do all he can’ to try and sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.
Speaking to the Sunday World, Aldridge said: “I would encourage Liverpool to do all they can to sign Erling Haaland next summer. A player like Haaland would give them that variation and while he would cost in excess of £100m to sign from Dortmund, he is the man I’d like to see Liverpool go for.
“This lad looks to be the real deal and he has lived up to his hype time and again over the last year. He’s strong, direct, great in the air and a brilliant finisher.
“On top of that, he is young and hungry, which is what Liverpool need in a team that has lost a little of its bite amid their current slump.
“Haaland has everything you look for to be a top centre-forward and having him alongside Mane, Salah and Diogo Jota next season would give Liverpool a real chance to spring back into contention for the top trophies.”
