Liverpool transfer round-up including Kylian Mbappe boost and centre-back update

Liverpool remain firmly linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe and the latest reports from the continent are likely to come as a boost to Anfield chiefs.

The young French striker was at his dazzling best against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night, scoring twice and assisting Neymar during a sensational Champions League performance.

The Reds know it will take a sensational bid to dislodge Mbappe from Parc des Princes – and they have also reportedly sounded out another attacking target.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp continues to search the market for a centre-back to cover injured duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – though Liverpool’s hopes of landing a fresh recruit in January depend on certain conditions.

Here is Thursday’s Liverpool transfer round-up.

Mbappe interest is “real”

Liverpool are reportedly legitimate contenders for Mbappe’s signature

Liverpool’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe is “real” and they are continuing to battle Real Madrid for the World Cup winner’s signature, according to Spanish outlet Sport .

And while Paris Saint-Germain chiefs remain hopeful Mbappe will extend his stay in the French capital by signing a new deal, he is believed to have doubts over the club’s ambition.

Mbappe’s current contract expires in just over 18 months’ time.

The report adds Liverpool may not be able to match PSG’s financial power, but they may be able to tempt the Frenchman to Anfield by offering him the most attractive project.

Centre-back update

Klopp’s side have so far weathered their centre-back crisis

Liverpool’s results in December may prove influential to whether the club signs a centre-back in the January transfer window, according to The Transfer Window podcast.

The Reds are second in the Premier League on goal difference and have progressed to the Champions League knock-out stages despite long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

If their results continue to impress over the festive period, Duncan Castles claims they may not enter the market for another central defender.

He said, per HITC : “My information is that they’re waiting to see what happens for this last month before the January window opens before committing to that strategy that Jurgen Klopp would like of bringing in a quality centre-back to compensate for the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, or whether to brazen it out to the end of the season.

“What might be important here, obviously results are important, but what might be very important is the game against Tottenham next midweek.”

Liverpool have fallen behind Arsenal and Wolves in the race to sign Valencia star Maxi Gomez, reports the Daily Mail.

Gomez, 24, has three goals and one assist in La Liga this season and has a £125million release clause – though cash-strapped Valencia are reportedly willing to listen to offers much lower than that fee.

As such, the Uruguay international, who is renowned for his workrate and well-rounded qualities, may provide a cut-price alternative to Kylian Mbappe.

But Liverpool would face widespread competition for Gomez’s signature as he has been monitored by numerous Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Wolves, Manchester City, Everton and West Ham.
