Liverpool transfer round-up: Reds eye Phillips, Barca renew Wijnaldum interest

Liverpool were involved in a pulsating 2-2 Merseyside derby draw at Everton on Saturday, but many fans are more concerned at the continued absence of Alisson Becker and worrying early news over Virgil van Dijk’s knee injury.

It is almost inevitable the Reds will consider freshening up their options in the January window
should van Dijk be ruled out for a prolonged spell.

In the summer, Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas was, for a long time, the only arrival at Anfield. But
in a whirlwind 24 hours, deals for Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota were then concluded.

A series of fringe players were allowed to leave in the subsequent weeks as the Reds slimmed down
their first-team squad for the current campaign.

Soon, clubs will begin to look ahead to the January transfer window. And that means the rumour mill
is already turning.

So here is the latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip.

Barcelona reignite Wijnaldum interest

Ronald Koeman is keen to take Wijnaldum to the Nou Camp

Barcelona will attempt to sign Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in January.

The Dutchman was managed by Blaugrana boss Ronald Koeman at international level and is now a
priority for him in the Camp Nou.

Wijnaldum is out of contract at Anfield next summer and would be available as a free agent then, so the Reds could look to cash-in in January instead.

The addition of Thiago Alcantara last month may have anticipated the exit of the former Newcastle
midfielder.

Reds eye Leeds star Phillips

Liverpool and Tottenham are both interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

A bid of £50million may be required to land the England international, who starred for the Yorkshire club in the Championship and again in the early weeks of the Premier League campaign.

The 24-year-old was one of the star performers on the pitch as Leeds were edged out 4-3 at Anfield on the opening day of the campaign.

Grimsby anger at Liverpool links

Ian Holloway has hit out at clubs trying to poach Grimsby's youngsters
Ian Holloway has hit out at clubs trying to poach Grimsby’s youngsters

Grimsby Town boss Ian Holloway is infuriated at reports linking Liverpool and Chelsea with the club’s young talents Louis Boyd and Ben Grist.

Both 15-year-olds appear set for a bright future in the game after being incorporated into the first-
team squad at the League Two club and according to The Athletic, the Reds are among the interested clubs.

Holloway told Grimsby Live: “Am I surprised at that? No I’m not surprised at that. Am I fuming about it? Yeah.

“These big wigs who want to take over football on the sly, they’ve already got rules passed that
they’re category A clubs, and they can steal those lads off us very, very cheaply, because it suits
them again doesn’t it?

“Those rules were passed by who? The academy setup is run by people who have got enough money to have all those things in place to get a tick in the box for category A.

“They’ve all got it because they’ve all got the money, and that means they can take those boys off me.”
