Liverpool must put their alarming Premier League form to one side tonight if they are to complete the job against RB Leipzig and reach the Uefa Champions League quarter-finals.
Jurgen Klopp‘s Reds were beaten 1-0 by Fulham on Sunday, their sixth successive League defeat at Anfield and the first such run in the club’s 129-year history.
With that in mind, it is perhaps a blessing in disguise that this “home” leg is being played at a neutral venue in Budapest because of current coronavirus travel restrictions.
Despite their domestic struggles, Klopp’s side will be favourites to advance having won the first leg 2-0 last month.
Though Julian Nagelsmann’s side made some serious defensive errors in that defeat, they have nothing to lose this time around – and that will make them a dangerous prospect for a brittle Liverpool defence.
Half-time | Liverpool 0-0 RB Leipzig (2-0 aggregate)
So, plenty of chances at either end, but it remains goalless – and as it stands, Liverpool are heading through to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Chance for Jota!
Liverpool very nearly take the lead on the stroke of half-time!
Upamecano pinches the ball off Salah inside his own box but then a heavy touch takes it away from him and his keeper… but Jota somehow manages to slam a loose ball into the side netting from close range!
45 mins: Nkunku is proving a handful on the left – he crosses for Forsberg, but the forward heads over under pressure. That’s a disappointing finish, and a half to forget for him.
42 mins: It’s not quite happening for Leipzig in attack. They’re working the ball quite confidently into the final third, but seem to be lacking the self-belief to make those moves count.
36 mins: Given Liverpool’s domestic form, Klopp will be happy so far. They could be ahead, but could also easily be behind – and Klopp would gladly take a 0-0 tonight.
Miss by Forsberg!
32 mins: Big, big chance for Leipzig.
The Bundesliga side cut Liverpool open and Forsberg should score from 15 yards, but drags a low shot wide of Alisson’s left-hand post! A little composure and that was a near-certain goal…
31 mins: Alisson has to be alert and shows quick feet to get across and claim a shot from outside the area.
Liverpool work the ball well again to release Alexander-Arnold inside the Leipzig box.
He pulls the ball back from the byline for a tap-in, but Upamecano does really well to clear for a corner.
Thiago’s having fun out there – he tries a bicycle kick from 20 yards out, but hits it straight at Gulacsi.
Chance for Salah!
23 mins: How has this not gone in?!
Thiago launches a counter with a brilliant half-volley karate kick over the top to Salah.
The Egyptian bears down on goal but sees his shot saved by Gulacsi, and Mane heads the rebound into the turf before a free-kick is called for Leipzig.
