Liverpool front line compared to ‘raptors’ by assistant

Liverpool’s Carabao Cup campaigns under Jurgen Klopp have almost exclusively been a time for change.

But a couple of constants have been the presence of Pep Lijnders in pre-match press conferences and in turn, the Dutchman’s ability to turn a phrase when it comes to describing his players.

Klopp’s assistant previously described Diogo Jota as a ‘pressing monster’, with his ability to hassle opponents when in possession.

And this time around, Lijnders has described the Reds’ starting trio from their win over Manchester United as like ‘velociraptors in Jurassic Park’.

Liverpool ’s front three of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino ran roughshod over the moribund Red Devils, winning 5-0 at Old Trafford.

Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah have both scored Premier League hat-tricks in the last two weeks

Salah’s hat-trick brought his tally for the season up to a staggering 15, while Jota also notched his fourth of an injury-affected campaign.

Meanwhile, Fimrino and Sadio Mane, who was a late substitute against United, have scored 12 times between them.

Liverpool have already found the net 41 times in all competitions and Lijnders has heaped praise on the relentless example the forwards are setting to the rest of the team.

Asked for the reason behind the prolific scoring form of the team so far, Lijnders joked: “We’re shooting from everywhere!

“But no, I think it has a lot to do with how the team is playing so you can never judge scoring just from scoring.

“It’s always about just how we move the ball from the back, it’s the whole package that creates.

Pep Lijnders has been full of praise for Liverpool’s front three

“Our front players constantly get into good positions to score and then the quality of our front three, we said they looked like velociraptors in Jurassic Park and they go for it.

“They are lethal and that is what we want, of course.

“So if you score in the right moments, these games against Manchester United are a great example of what can happen as well.”

Remarkably, the free-scoring starting XI is almost identical to the one which went four months without a goal from open play at the turn of the year.

“Did we change anything [in the summer]? No,” Lijnders explained to the ECHO . “We always just want to improve. Sometimes proving it is just going back to basics and that is what we did in the summer.

“Also, top players – and we have a few, I think – need a break after some emotional periods, a lot of finals, a lot of intense seasons.

“It’s good for them to have a break because if you want to be consistent, you have to respect recovery and the process of recovery and that is not only between the games but the seasons.

“Long may it continue!”
