Klopp reflects on Liverpool’s win at Wolves

When Liverpool appointed a specialist throw-in coach in August 2018, English football raised a collective eyebrow.

But fast forward three years and Thomas Gronnemark’s arrival at Anfield – in an extremely niche role – notably prompted the Reds going from pretenders to contenders under Jurgen Klopp.

Now, the German tactician is looking to do the same in another department – goalkeeping.

Claudio Taffarel, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, recently joined Klopp’s coaching staff in a bid to give Liverpool a new “goalkeeper philosophy” on Merseyside.

John Achterberg, an established goalkeeping coach at the club, is sticking around and will head-up the department, renewing his contract until 2024, when the Reds will hoped to have blazed a trail once again.

Taffarel will combine his duties with Liverpool and Brazil

So, what exactly are the Premier league title chasers looking to achieve?

“Surely goalkeeping can only be made so complex,” a cynic might say.

Well, Klopp explained the addition of Taffarel ahead of his side’s 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

“He’s a really good guy,” the Liverpool manager began.

“We’ve had this idea for a while to work with our talented keepers.

“An outstanding bunch of players there. We have lots of games, so constantly on the road.

“We wanted a real solution for these boys and want to create our own Goalkeeper philosophy.

Klopp is thinking to the future

“He was a world-class player. We spoke to Alisson and he was quite pleased about it.

“He’s known him for some years so here we go. It’s exciting. A brilliant guy.”

He added: “We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.

“We really want to really be a proper goalkeeping school in world football and so that’s why we’re bringing in a third very, very experienced goalkeeper coach.”

Alisson Becker knows Taffarel well, with the acclaimed ex-Brazil stopper now a coach with the Selecao.

The 55-year-old won 101 caps at international level and spent time playing in Europe for clubs such as Parma and Galatasaray.

He won two league titles and a UEFA Cup with in Turkey, later taking his expertise into coaching, which Klopp will appreciate.

“You cannot have enough specialists around you,” the Reds boss said back in 2018 when the lesser-known Gronnemark was appointed.

“I must always be the guy who makes the decisions on when we use all these specialists but you cannot have enough.

“We have the fitness, medical department, we have the nutrition, and now we have somebody for throw-ins.”

But in December 2021, they have someone extra for goalkeepers and a forward-thinking Klopp will be hoping Taffarel can have the same impact as Gronnemark.
