Man City and Liverpool players rated and slated after Premier League draw

Liverpool and Manchester City could not be separated at the Etihad as Jurgen Klopp was left the more satisfied.

The visitors made an aggressive start, playing all their frontline forwards in advanced positions in what appeared a 4-2-4 formation.

Liverpool were rewarded with a penalty after 13 minutes after Kyle Walker clipped Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah smashed home from the spot.

Gabriel Jesus then hauled the hosts level with a delightful turn and finish but Kevin De Bruyne missed from the spot after the ball hit Joe Gomez’s hand.

Neither side could find a winner after the break and the result leaves Liverpool in third, one point behind leaders Leicester, while City are left languishing in 11th.

Here, we rate the players on both sides…

Man City

Ederson 7

Came off line to thwart Firmino in the first minute. Two saves in succession from Robertson and Jota.

Walker 6

Passing awry early on. Gave away a penalty with a clumsy and needless foul on Mane.

Kyle Walker gave away a penalty

Dias 7

Had his work cut out dealing with Liverpool’s marauding attackers but disciplined and composed.

Laporte 7

Positionally sound and strong in the air. Decent distribution and always alert to danger. Booked.

Cancelo 8

Early tackle on Salah set tone for fine display. Great cross for Jesus, who missed with header.

Gundogan 5

Tidy enough on the ball in midfield but struggled to really impose himself on the game.

Rodri 7

His fine crossfield ball to Walker to start move that led to City’s equaliser.

De Bruyne 6

Set up Jesus for the equaliser. Missed from the spot when he dragged his effort wide.

Kevin De Bruyne missed from the penalty spot

Sterling 6

Stayed on his feet when fouled by Jota just prior to Liverpool goal. Saw first-half shot saved.

Jesus 7

Super turn and clinical finish for his second goal in as many games. Missed a simple header.

Torres 5

Impressive goalscoring run of late in Europe but never really influenced the game. Subbed.

Bernardo 6 (Torres, 61)

Allison 7

Left exposed by defence for Jesus goal. Fine save to cut out De Bruyne cross just after restart.

Alexander-Arnold 6

Failed to get close enough to Jesus for the equaliser. Angled shot saved by Ederson. Went off injured.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was taken off injured

Matip 6

Made some key interceptions on only his second start of the season. Booked for foul on De Bruyne.

Gomez 6

Conceded penalty after handling De Bruyne cross but otherwise solid and composed.

Robertson 6

City’s equaliser came from a move down his side, as did the penalty. Shot saved by Ederson.

Henderson 6

Played a superb ball through to Mane just before half-time. Played with customary diligence.

Wijnaldum 7

Typically committed and robust display. Tracked opponents well, combative throughout.

Salah 7

Opened scoring from the spot with his 10 goal of the season. Shackled by City thereafter.

Mo Salah was given little room

Mane 8

Won penalty for opener. A constant threat in attack and formidable work ethic throughout.

Firminho 5

Wasted chance inside the first minute. Pretty anonymous thereafter. Subbed just before the hour.

Jota 6

Lively but unable to continue his recent goalscoring heroics, Ederson twice denying him.

Shaqiri 6 (Firmino, 59)

Milner 6 (Alexander-Arnold, 63)
