Guardiola Fumes at Milner’s red card escape

Manchester City are believed to be interested in signing Erling Haaland next summer, and a move for the centre-forward could solve two key issues in Pep Guardiola’s team. The Citizens are lacking an out-and-out striker, and are still trying to convince Raheem Sterling to sign a new contract at the club.

Haaland is one of the most sought after players in the world currently, with some of the wealthiest clubs in Europe all beginning to prepare their bids for the forward.

The Norwegian has scored 47 goals in 48 Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund and has impressed with his pace, power and clinical finishing.

Haaland has a £68million release clause in his contract that becomes active next summer, which is a significantly cut-price figure on what he is actually worth in today’s market.

Pep Guardiola wanted to sign a striker before the start of the 2021/22 campaign

After a failed pursuit of Harry Kane this year, it is no secret that City manager Guardiola wants to sign a no.9 sooner rather than later and the opportunity to sign a probable future Ballon d’Or winner seems too good to pass up on.

However, Guardiola will first need to convince Sterling that he still has an important role to play with City after The Sun revealed that the England international is stalling contract extension negotiations as he wants the assurance of regular game time before committing his future to the club.

Potentially, the prospect of lining up next to Haaland next season might be enough to persuade the former Liverpool winger to put his faith in the Cityzens.

Sterling has been heavily rotated so far this campaign and has only started two games, which is obviously a key reason why he has been questioning how important he will be as time goes on.

But the 26-year-old has often thrived when having a target man to play off of, so the prospect of playing next to towering forward Haaland will be very attractive to the winger as it could give him the chance to make himself one of the first names on the team sheet again.

At Euro 2020, Sterling led the England team alongside Spurs’ Kane, and it brought out the very best in him.

He scored three goals in seven appearances for the Three Lions and many believe that if Gareth Southgate’s team came out on top in the penalty shootout against Italy in the final then Sterling would have been awarded the Player of the Tournament.

Newcastle are one of several clubs thought to be keeping tabs on the Sterling situation, and they have the cash to splash after Mike Ashley sold their club last week.

The new owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, are worth £320billion and have set their sights on taking the Magpies to the very top of the Premier League.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand urged Newcastle to consider Sterling as they begin their plans for the January transfer window.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “I’d be going to try and make like a mad couple of signings, like huge, that I think would be gettable.

“I’d be looking at people like Raheem Sterling. Raheem Sterling’s not playing regularly, I’d go ask him the question.”

It remains unknown how successful the conversations between Guardiola and Sterling will be and whether Haaland will eventually sign for the title holders, but both will be crucial negotiations for City.
