Man City’s Riyad Mahrez issues clear response to Arsenal transfer speculation

Riyad Mahrez has quashed any rumours linking him with a move to Arsenal this summer.

The Manchester City star was touted as a potential target for Mikel Arteta as he looks to overhaul his struggling Gunners squad.

The Arsenal boss worked alongside Mahrez during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, with the Algerian admitting he was emotional when he departed.

Mahrez could have joined the Gunners back in 2016, only to see his club at the time, Leicester City block the transfer.

Five years later, it is very different story with Mahrez a key component of Guardiola’s all-conquering side.

The 30-year-old netted 14 times in all competitions and has no intention of leaving The Etihad.

Riyad Mahrez has already said he wants to retire as a Man City player

Speaking ahead of last month’s Champions League final, Mahrez was asked about his plans for the future, claiming he hopes to retire as a City player.

“I feel great at Manchester City, and I have no wish to look elsewhere,” he explained.

“I don’t yet know what my situation will be, but I am happy at City – and they are the club where I want to be.

“People have spoken about me ending my career with Marseille, but that is not something I think about.

“I want to finish my career in England, with City. I don’t foresee myself at Marseille.”

And in the midst of transfer speculation, Mahrez has reaffirmed his commitment to City, claiming nothing has changed.

Talking to DZ Sport following his nation’s 1-0 victory against Mali, he said: “There is nothing about my future. I am well in Manchester. I will stay God willing.”

It’s set to be a busy summer for Arteta and technical director Edu, with the former admitting his squad needs ‘changing’ after a disappointing season.

“The squad needs changing.” he said last month. “There were already a lot of changes in December, something that has not been done in years, but it tells us where we were.

“Things are going to have to change and the owners are going to back it up.”

A number of players are also expected to leave the club, with the likes of Joe Willock, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira all facing uncertain futures.

However, their window hasn’t got off to the smoothest start with Emi Buendia and Odsonne Edouard both set to complete moves elsewhere.

It is understood Arsenal lodged a bid for Buendia, only to see Aston Villa counter, agreeing a deal with Norwich City.

Edouard meanwhile looks set to join Leicester, he had been linked with a move to north London, but the Foxes look set to win the race and are in advanced talks with the Celtic striker.
