Man United captain Maguire offers new injury update with Varane out

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were without their influential captain for the final two matches before the October international break – the last-gasp Champions League win over Villarreal and frustrating home draw with Everton – after he limped off with a calf problem during the 1-0 home defeat by Aston Villa on September 25.

The injury also prevented Maguire from being called up to the England squad for the latest pair of 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

And while Maguire says he will be back in action soon, the fact he has yet to train fully with his team-mates surely makes him a big doubt for Saturday’s trip to former club Leicester in the Premier League.

“Yeah it’s getting there,” Maguire said in an injury update posted on United’s official website.

“I still haven’t trained yet with the squad, but I am getting better, I am progressing as I should be. It is obviously a frustrating injury for me to get, but I am progressing and I will be back on the pitch soon.”

Victor Lindelof had been deputising alongside Varane in Maguire’s absence, with Eric Bailly now likely to partner the Swede in the heart of United’s defence at the King Power Stadium.

Solskjaer does have Phil Jones now back available as well as forward Marcus Rashford, who has now recovered from shoulder surgery, and winger Amad Diallo.

Such a defensive headache comes at an inopportune time for United, with Solskjaer under yet more pressure and a tough run of fixtures on the horizon.

After the trip to Leicester, the Red Devils face Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City in consecutive outings in the top-flight, with a pair of Champions League meetings with Serie A outfit Atalanta also coming up.
