Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick expressed his disappointment following his team’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Red Devils took the lead through Jadon Sancho, who won the ball from Jorginho on the counter-attack and calmly slotted his effort past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea equalised through a Jorginho penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was penalised for kicking Thiago Silva while trying to clear the ball.

Although replays confirmed referee Anthony Taylor made the right decision, Carrick was keen to vent his frustration at full-time.

“Disappointed actually,” said the stand-in manager when asked for his thoughts. “When you are in front in a game like this to have it taken away is disappointing.

“I’m proud of the players and the group all week. In a difficult situation we tried to make the best of it. But there is that little bitter feeling.

“We came to win the game. A little disappointed, I can’t lie.”

On the penalty decision, Carrick added: “I don’t think it was a penalty at all.

“They have had a lot of shots. David had two saves, we knew before the game he would have to make one or two. Other than that I have felt quite comfortable in the game.

“Of course we want to be better. I am not getting carried away but I thought we defended well. I cannot fault the boys one bit.

“To come away disappointed and to feel like you have left something out there is a positive.”

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, admitted he was pleased to get a draw against United.

“I am happy, absolutely happy,” said Tuchel. “I saw a huge effort. We put the pressure up high, we were brave and courageous.

“While they defended deep we needed the first goal to open up a bit. If you don’t score you always run a bit behind, you feel you are the stronger team.

“We had some chances we maybe should have used but in general I am happy how we played… we have to live with it.”

The result ensures Chelsea remain one point clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s champions secured a narrow 2-1 victory against high-flying West Ham at the Etihad on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are also in the running after their 4-0 victory against Southampton on Saturday, sitting two points behind the Blues.

On the title race, Tuchel added: “We cannot be surprised [at the United result]. Things like this happen.

“We played such good games against Burnley and Manchester Untied and feel disappointed as we think by far we did enough.

“Over a long season you drop points and you dig in and try to steal them back if someone steals them from you.

“We are in the middle of the race and this is where we want to be.”
