Solskjaer takes responsibility for Maguire selection in defeat

After a relatively low-key start to the football season, this might just be the time when the Premier League comes alive.

In recent weeks, huge heavyweight boxing fights and the NFL coming to England has seemed to take a lot of the attention of sporting fans – as well as a round of international football matches that did little to inspire anyone.

However, in the coming weeks, football will take centre stage with Manchester United at the heart of the action.

So far, we haven’t seen anything yet in the Premier League that, truthfully, we didn’t expect.

Manchester City and Chelsea were always going to be serious forces this season and have already shown that.

Most pundits knew that Liverpool were being written off far too much and the lethal power they showed at Watford on Saturday further reinforces the point that they are serious title contenders this season.

Most sensible minds knew that the hype around the Cristiano Ronaldo signing wasn’t going to solve some other serious weaknesses Manchester United still had – and the manner of the defeat at Leicester made this point yet again.

Brentford’s start to the season has been decent but, that aside, there hasn’t been much we didn’t see coming.

Of the four top teams mentioned, Manchester United have by far the toughest run of games coming up – including hosting both Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as an away game against Tottenham Hotspur.

This means one of two things for United.

If they can pull off some decent results, particularly against Liverpool and City, then the Premier League will come alive as that top four gets seriously ruffled up and United fans start to see their team finally come together.

On the other hand, if United really struggle during this period, including losing to their two great rivals in front of their home fans, then things could spiral badly for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team.

The result at Leicester doesn’t bode well and if this continues then the pressure will be enormous on the manager as they move towards Christmas.

Will Solskjaer last the season at United? Have your say below.

However, we must remember that Solskjaer and United have had a habit of pulling off a big result when they most need it. They will be praying for something similar against City or Liverpool at Old Trafford.

So, it will be all eyes on Manchester United in the weeks ahead.

The United manager, players and fans will all know that this is a vital period of time for them. They couldn’t have got off to a worse start at Leicester and Solskjaer will be desperately hoping that a decent result mid-week in the Champions League can pull them back on track.

They will rightly be focused on themselves but United’s performances during this time could also seriously impact the shape of the Premier League table.
