Man Utd handed boost in Varane pursuit after Real Madrid saga takes twist

Real Madrid are reportedly ready to sell Raphael Varane this summer, if the central defender does not commit his future to the club.

Varane’s current deal expires at the end of the next season and there are concerns that he could be looking to run that down.

With Sergio Ramos’ future up in the air, Los Blancos would rather keep hold of his centre-back partner, but could be forced into action.

According to Marca, while a new contract for the 27-year-old is still a “priority” for Real, if he makes it clear he won’t sign a new deal, they will cash in this summer.

Raphael Varane has long been liked with a move to Old Trafford

The report claims that Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Juventus are all interested, with the Red Devils’ interest dating back to 2019.

That was the first time Varane considered leaving, with United and PSG waiting in the wings. On that occasion, Zinedine Zidane’s return was enough to convince him to stay, although that may not be enough this time around.

United were extensively linked with a high-profile signing to partner Harry Maguire at the back during the summer window. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to stick with his options, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe all given opportunities.

Victor Lindelof’s position has come under threat after the draw with Everton

However, their 30 goals conceded – a tally higher than all of their title rivals – could force Old Trafford bosses into a move at the end of the campaign.

Following the 3-3 draw with Everton, which saw United concede an injury time equaliser, United legend Paul Scholes claimed his old side must sign a defender with pace to go alongside Maguire.

“Their defence has just not been good enough,” Scholes said. “It’s hard to put your finger on it as well because you look individually and they’re okay. Maguire is a good defender.

Varane and Sergio Ramos could both be moved on at the end of the season

“I still have question marks against Lindelof. I always will.

“I don’t think he’s quick enough to play alongside Maguire, I don’t think he’s aggressive enough.”

If United are to land Varane, it is understood the Spanish giants will be looking for around €50million, particularly in the midst of their financial troubles during the coronavirus pandemic.
