Erling Haaland admits rumoured fee is ‘a lot of money’

When Manchester United ended their summer spree with the stunning return of Cristiano Ronaldo, it was widely acknowledged as a job well done.

Ronaldo joined Jadon Sancho and Rapahel Varane through the doors at Carrington, in a window which backed up Old Trafford bosses’ commitment to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With five goals in his first seven games back with the club, Ronaldo has proved that despite being 36, there is still plenty left in the tank.

The Portuguese has hinted that he could play into his 40s, something which his manager has also predicted.

But a glimpse at the pressing stats from Ronaldo – or lack of it – there is still the feeling that a long-term option to lead the line could still be on the agenda.

United largely kept themselves out of the speculation regarding Harry Kane, instead allowing Manchester City to publicly chase and ultimately fail to sign the Tottenham talisman.

It’s highly likely that come the end of this season, Kane’s future will once again be the source of constant conjecture, particularly if Spurs continue on the mediocre path they’ve started on under Nuno Espirito Santo.

But according to the Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer and football director John Murtough have a mutual agreement that Erling Haaland is a better option.

Seven years his junior, Haaland is standing on the precipice of becoming the heir to Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s throne as the best player in the world.

The Red Devils suffered a major blow in the winter of 2019, when after protracted talks, the Norwegian forward opted to join Borussia Dortmund from RB Salzburg.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew out to negotiate with Haaland and his agent Mino Raiola, although attempts to cut his representative out of a deal proved a major stumbling block.

Since signing for Dortmund, the 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength, plundering an astonishing 68 goals in 67 games in all competitions.

His physical style looks perfectly matched for the Premier League and his €75million release – which becomes active next summer – marks the chance to seal what, on paper, looks a monumental bargain.

Solskjaer and Murtough held transfer talks in September, with a view on stealing a march on some of their rivals.

And despite landing Ronaldo, Gary Neville believes his old club should still be seriously considering a move for Haaland.

Asked if the signing of Ronaldo could change their transfer plans, he told Sky Sports: “No, I think Manchester United next year will probably lose [Anthony] Martial, they’ll lose [Juan] Mata, [Edinson] Cavani will leave because they got another year out of him.

“So it will free places to be filled.

“If Haaland becomes available next summer and they want to do a deal with his agent – which is the big thing with Haaland – then Manchester United should go for him.

“And I don’t think Cristiano coming prevents Haaland joining.”

Solskjaer claims he still has a close relationship with his compatriot and along with Murtough, Manchester United’s key decision makers appear in lockstep over a potential move.
