Manchester United have yet to complete a summer signing, but that could soon change with the protracted saga to bring Frenkie de Jong said to be nearing a conclusion
The wait for Manchester United’s first signing goes on – with Erik ten Hag just days away from his first pre-season session.
Ten Hag had hoped to complete the bulk of his summer business before players returned to Carrington, but it’s been a frustrating introduction to life at Old Trafford. The Dutchman is still hopeful of a number of arrivals prior to the Premier League starting next month, starting with a central midfielder.
Frenkie de Jong remains the Red Devils’ top transfer target and developments emerging from Spain paint a positive picture of their pursuit of the Barcelona star. After completing a deal for the Netherlands international, attention can then turn elsewhere, with reports of several players being targeted.
There is also expected to be numerous departures in what promises to be a summer of overhaul in the red half of Manchester. With that in mind, Mirror Football has the latest batch of United transfer rumours.
De Jong deal ‘very, very advanced’
It’s the saga which has dominated the early weeks of United’s transfer window, but Catalan newspaper SPORT have provided a positive update. They claim that an agreement between United and Barca is now very close, with talks trending in a positive direction in recent days.
The Blaugrana have played hardball in negotiations and have remained steadfast in their request of £68million for the 25-year-old. That is now the fee United are happy to part with and there is now a confidence a deal will be completed by June 30.
After the breakthrough in talks, United have shifted their focus on the player’s representatives and in reaching an agreement on personal terms.
United ‘in the running’ for Felix
Ten Hag is also said to be keen on signing a new attacker and Joao Felix has emerged as a potential target. The Portuguese international cost Atletico Madrid more than £100m three years ago, but his future in the Spanish capital remains uncertain.
Correio da Manha claim that United are amongst a clutch of Premier League teams in the running to sign the forward and is seen as a ‘strong option’ for Ten Hag. Along with United; Chelsea and Tottenham are also said to be monitoring his situation ahead of a potential bid.
Gonçalo Inácio chance
A central defender is also on Ten Hag’s laundry list of summer requirements, despite having several names vying for a starting berth. Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire were the first-choice options, but fitness issues and lack of form meant that partnership never had the opportunity to gel.
Behind those two, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof are expensive transfer misses, while Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones sit further down the pecking order. That likely means United will need to sell before they buy in that area, but they have been presented a chance to sign Sporting centre-back Inacio, according to reports in Portugal.
Jornal de Noticias report that Sporting are willing to listen to an offer below his £39m release clause, having initially refused to negotiate with potential suitors. Inacio shares an agent with Bruno Fernandes and the two clubs have a recent working relationship.
Wolves have been suggested as another club in the running for the 20-year-old, although United could step in front of them with a bid to Sporting’s liking.
