Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has struggled for form over the past year and appears set to be running out of time at the club.

The Frenchman has failed to find the net in any of his six outings to date this campaign and scored just four Premier League goals in 22 appearances last season.

Fresh reports have now linked Martial with a future move to Borussia Dortmund, who will need to bolster their attacking options due to the future of Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian striking sensation is set to depart the club next year, with a reported £65million release clause in his contract set to come into play next summer.

Anthony Martial has had a frustrating time recently at Man Utd

Almost every major club in European football has been linked with a move for Haaland, whose release clause coming into effect makes him attainable for many leading clubs.

United are among those who have been interested in signing the striker, who was coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time in Norwegian football with Molde.

A report from German media outlet Sport 1, as cited by Sport Witness, now report that Martial is on Dortmund’s radar as a potential replacement for Haaland.

It is claimed that United would be willing to cash-in on their underperforming striker next year, although they are hopeful of holding out for a transfer upwards of £43million.

That would be in excess of what the Bundesliga giants would be willing to pay for a Haaland replacement, with their budget said to be in the price range of £25-35million.

Such a scenario means that their move for Martial is currently unlikely although their admiration of his skillset and potential may suggest that their interest could be revived.

The possibility remains open that United drop their price valuation of Martial in a transfer market still suffering the long-term ramifications of the pandemic.

United will no doubt be keen to bolster their squad once more next summer with several signings and striker Haaland – whom they tried to sign from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020, when he instead moved to Dortmund – is likely to be on their shortlist.

That would lead to both clubs to enter into transfer negotiations less than a year after concluding the deal that took Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford for £72million.

United may look to manoeuvre themselves into a position of strength on a Haaland deal and move ahead of their rivals by proposing Martial goes the other way.

The 25-year-old has scored 78 goals for United since joining the club from Monaco in 2015 but has fallen down the pecking order in recent years with the arrivals of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside the emergence of Mason Greenwood.

His goal return of 7 in 36 appearances last season was his lowest since joining the club and he failed to find the net in either of his two starts this season – against Southampton in the Premier League or in the EFL Cup loss against West Ham.
