Man Utd stance on striker signing after Cavani decision and Kane’s request

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Edinson Cavani signing a contract extension would not put off Manchester United buying a striker in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United, as well as Chelsea and Manchester City, were put on red alert on Monday evening when it emerged Harry Kane had informed Tottenham of his desire to leave the club.

The England striker has a phenomenal scoring record for club and country but has yet to win a single trophy in his career. And at 27 years of age (28 in July), it seems the Spurs striker has reached a crossroads.

Cavani has shown what an out and out striker can bring to United but recently committed his future to the club for another year. However, Solskjaer has confirmed that Cavani staying will not affect their transfer plans this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer briefly discussed Manchester United’s transfer plans.

“We’re looking to strengthen the squad this summer,” said the United boss. “Of course there’s many things you have to consider when putting a squad together.

“I’m not saying if Edi [Cavani] stays that means someone else in a forward position won’t come in.”

When pushed on Kane in particular, he added: “I can’t talk about other players in other teams.

“I think you know me well enough and I don’t think that’s very respectful of any team, any players. There’s loads of good players out there. I could say Messi is interesting, Ronaldo. But I can’t talk about them.”

But Solskjaer is a fan of Kane and spoke of his qualities earlier in the season.

“When you’re playing against one of the best centre forwards in European football, of course it’s something that we prepare for,” he said.

“I think every team when they play Tottenham or England, you know Harry Kane’s qualities.

“But we prepare the defenders for every single opponent. The season that Son and Kane have had, their relationship is one of Tottenham’s strengths and they have other quality players we have to be aware of.”
