Manchester United players and staff were reportedly seen crying in the dressing room following their 4-1 defeat to Watford as the sack looms over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Reports suggest that the Red Devils players are now expecting the departure of the Norwegian boss following their dismal display at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.

And it is understood some members of the United became overwhelmed as it is looks increasingly likely that it could be Solskjaer’s final game in charge, with a report from the Manchester Evening News claiming some were reduced to tears after the game.

Solskjaer was already under immense pressure after a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Old Trafford earlier this month.

His position was thought to be in grave danger when they were swept aside by Manchester City a week later, but Solskjaer survived the international period after the Man United board met to discuss his future.

However, he may not survive after their latest setback as various reports suggest the Man United hierarchy have scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss his future on Saturday evening.

His United side were well beaten after a dominant first-half display by Watford saw them race into a two-goal lead.

Ismaila Sarr had seen two spot-kicks saved by David de Gea after VAR forced a retake for encroachment when Kiko Femenia struck home the rebound.

But the Hornets recovered to take the lead through Joshua King and Sarr soon made amends for his penalty horror show with a fine effort from a tight angle.

Substitute Donny van de Beek got one back five minutes after coming off the bench but Harry Maguire’s red card dashed their hopes of an equaliser.

But Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis made sure of the three points in stoppage time to pile the pressure on Solskjaer.

Solskjaer walked over to the away end at full-time and waved to the fans in the crowd, apologising for the team’s performance in his post-match interview.

And the 48-year-old was defiant that he can turn the results around despite their poor recent form.

“I always have belief in myself,” Solskjaer said after the game.

“Of course, at the minute it’s a difficult time for us. I can see, I can trust every single one out there to give their all. The staff are fantastic.

“But the results are difficult. I believe we can turn this around.”

Their latest defeat on the road means United have picked up only four points since September 25 — the worst record of any Premier League side.

The Red Devils have also lost five of their last seven matches in the Premier League, with Solskjaer heavily backed by the bookmakers to leave his position in the near future.

Leicester City head coach Brendan Rodgers has been installed as the early favourite to replace Solskjaer should he be relieved of his duties.

Former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag are also thought to be under consideration.

It remains to be seen whether Solskjaer will still be in the dugout for Man United’s next fixture on Tuesday, an away trip to face Villarreal in the Champions League.
