Liverpool’s record 5-0 win at Man Utd: Solskjaer at ‘rock bottom’

Manchester United will finish seventh in the Premier League if they don’t sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to former England striker Darren Bent.

The Red Devils have picked up just one point from their last four league fixtures and suffered a humiliating 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

When asked for his opinion on talkSPORT, Bent said: “Seventh. If they keep Solskjaer the whole season, honestly, seventh.

“If they’re going to play the way they did against Liverpool and Atalanta, any of the top eight teams could beat them on any given day.”

United were expected to be challenging for the Premier League title after investing in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under huge pressure

But Solskjaer’s team have failed to convince – looking weak, unbalanced and inconsistent – leaving them in danger of being left behind by England’s elite.

United face a nightmare run of fixtures in the coming weeks, playing Tottenham, Atalanta, Manchester City, Watford, Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Solskjaer’s job is likely to depend on the next three fixtures – before the international break – and he is expected to be in charge for Sunday’s game at Spurs.

Ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been linked with the United job, although it’s believed Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane isn’t interested.

Many in the media have called for Solskjaer to be sacked, including former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan.

He said: “It’s like asking a one-legged man to run 100m in under ten seconds and then telling him off for not doing something you know he can’t do.

“It is becoming ridiculous now because everybody with half a brain knows, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer isn’t really capable of managing these players and getting from these players what is required.

“You might wish it so but wishing it doesn’t make it so… the evidence is clear. It doesn’t matter how many players you bring in.

“The culture, the temperature, the tone, the tactics of a football club are set by the individual who has the gravitas to concentrate the minds of elite footballers – he doesn’t have that factor.

Darren Bent doesn’t believe Solskjaer can deliver success at Old Trafford

“It doesn’t make him an absolute abject failure, it does not make him an awful football manager, it just makes him that little bit short for what is required for Manchester United.”

City legend Micah Richards, meanwhile, believes United need to publicly back Solskjaer until the end of the season or relieve him of his duties now – ending speculation.

He said: “He [Solskjaer] has such a legendary status at the club so it was always going to be difficult when things come to this.

“It has to be down to the coaching and some of the things were ridiculous, basic mistakes.

Should Manchester United sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer? Have your say!

“They don’t know when to press or when to drop deep and it looks like Ole does not know what to do.

“They need to back him and say he will go to the end of the season or bring someone else in.

“I feel sorry for him, looking at a person who has this legendary status but he looks a bit out of his depth. If that can’t be resolved they need to move forward.”
