Solskjaer ‘excited’ to work with new Man Utd signing Varane

Manchester United kicked off their season with a dream result and have had a transfer window fans dreamt of.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has added Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to his squad, initially costing the club just under £110million.

The pair were both at Old Trafford in different capacities as the Red Devils smashed Leeds United 5-1, getting their Premier League campaign off to an ideal start.

United have been busy refining their squad in what they hope will be a term that sees them end a four-year trophy drought and seriously challenge for the top-flight title.

Solskjaer himself has even hinted that the club’s business many not be over with over a fortnight between now and Deadline Day.

As well as incomings, departures have also been making the headlines throughout the summer as the likes of Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba have been linked with moves away.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest transfer news from Old Trafford.

Varane unveiled to Old Trafford

In a throwback to classic signing announcements, Raphael Varane stepped out onto the pitch at the Theatre of Dreams around 10 minutes before kick-off on Saturday.

Holding his shirt, describing the Frenchman’s reception as warm would be an understatement as fans went wild watching the four-time Champions League and one-time World Cup winner walk out of the tunnel to the centre circle and back.

The 28-year-old watched his new side hammer Leeds thanks to a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick and four Paul Pogba assists, a man Varane knows all about from their time as France teammates.

United have paid Real Madrid an initial £34million for his services but could face difficulty getting into the starting XI immediately thanks to the performance of Victor Lindelof.

Lingard tipped for exit

Amid reports that West Ham United are set to make a bid to sign Jesse Lingard, Red Devils legend Gary Neville has advised the 28-year-old to return to east London.

Lingard spent the second half of last season as a West Ham player and enjoyed a spectacular upturn in form under David Moyes.

“Jesse needs to leave for Jesse. He got pride last year playing at West Ham,” Neville said.

“He’s the man there and he’ll come back here and play 15 games, and be a good squad player, but he doesn’t want that again surely after what he experienced last season. Jesse needs to leave for Jesse Lingard.”

Lingard is currently isolating due to testing positive for Covid-19, although did feature heavily in Solskjaer’s depleted squad during most of pre-season.

Amad set for loan decision

Teenage winger Amad is expected to leave United on loan this summer and will be left with a decision to make over where to go.

Fabrizio Romano claims that FC Basel and Crystal Palace have enquired about a season-long loan for the 19-year-old, who joined the Red Devils in January.

Clubs from the Bundesliga and other Premier League sides are also said to be “in the race” but no final call has been made yet.

Diallo’s shirt number has recently changed to 16, as Varane takes his original 19.
