Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested the January transfer window may be a quiet one for his side.
But the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is reportedly conjuring a long-term plan which will see the Red Devils strengthen four positions in coming windows.
United have struggled for consistency in the opening months of the season and it is hoped this can be addressed with new recruits in key areas on the pitch.
One player United are believed to be pursuing is Bayern Munich star David Alaba, who is out of contract at the end of the season and sought after by many of Europe’s giants.
Here is Thursday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.
United enter Alaba race
Clubs across Europe are lining up to enter pre-contract talks with Bayern Munich defender David Alaba just as soon as the January transfer window opens.
Among these clubs will be Manchester United, as German outlet Bild claims the Red Devils have joined the race for the in-demand Austria international.
Alaba has enjoyed a glittering career with Bayern but looks set to call it quits with the Bavarian giants after talks over an extension to his contract – which expires next summer – broke down last month.

Four positions targeted
Manchester United chiefs have identified four positions which need strengthening in coming transfer windows, according to the Manchester Evening News .
The January window is expected to be a largely quiet one for the Red Devils as they work towards a long-term squad overhaul which will be put into action next summer.
The profiles United are keen to bring on board are a winger, a centre-back, a right-back to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and a defensive midfielder.
The report adds the Red Devils will only enter the market in January if one of their targets becomes available.

Red Devils suffer Musiala blow
Manchester United have reportedly been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Bayern Munich starlet Jamal Musiala.
Musiala, 17, has 18 months left on his deal at the Allianz Arena and has been linked with United as well as rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
But the Daily Mail reports Bayern will fend off interest in the England U21 star by handing him a new contract which reflects his progress in Bavaria.
Musiala, who features in attacking midfield, has scored three goals in eight Bundesliga games this season.
